Cysts

Cysts are benign, slow-growing pockets of keratin or fluid under the skin. They're harmless but can become inflamed, painful, or cosmetically bothersome, at which point they're usually best removed.

What it is.

The most common skin cysts are epidermoid (often called sebaceous) cysts and pilar cysts of the scalp. They're encased in a thin sac that produces keratin. When the sac stays intact, the cyst is quiet; when it ruptures, the area can become red, tender, and inflamed.

How we treat it.

Quiet cysts can be left alone or excised electively. Inflamed cysts are first calmed with an injection or short course of antibiotics, then excised once the inflammation settles. Excision removes the entire sac so the cyst doesn't recur. Incision and drainage alone is a common reason cysts come back.

When to come in.

Have any growing lump, painful nodule, or recurring bump evaluated. We'll confirm the diagnosis and discuss whether removal makes sense for you.
